Scaleless update?

brianlovescheese Jan 07, 2009 10:50 AM

Are there any updates on the scaleless ball? I think there was a picture on here a few months ago or maybe ball-pythons.net and I was wondering if anyone knew how it was doing? I've been told that with scaleless snakes you have to assist them in shedding sometimes and it also makes me wonder why anyone would want a scaleless death adder in their collection lol.

This is all I found.

I have no idea why anyone would want one since it's a mutation and not a morph.....but I do wonder what it feels like!

lol, yeah thats the site I must have read about it. They have pictures of it eatting so I know it survived the after leaving the egg.

I'm not a fan of it, I just think it's very interesting and I love to see this animal so well, but if I was the owner I don't think I'd breed it ever just to keep that out of the gene pool.

I consider and color or pattern change a morph. I would say that a mutation would be just that, a change in the way the aniamal looks that isn't due to just color. Like the duck bill appearance that some talk about being prone in a certain morph. So I guess morphs can carry mutations and vice-versa. Anyway thats my opinon about it.

a mutation is a genetic change that cause a change in the animal. Albino is a gene that halts the production of melanin. If this is a morph (and most of us say it is) then a morph is a mutation.

The mutation does not need be a physical change. Could be nutritional requirements change (diabetes). Could be increased survivorship/lethal. People that are heterozygous for sickle cell anemia are resitant to malaria (something desirable in equatorial Africa) but the folks homozygous have the dreaded anemia.

Suffice to say mutations come in many flavors and we reptile people call them 'morphs'. This is likely because we chase after the mutations that are 'morphologically' interesting to use.

Scaleless snakes are indeed a morph. The trait is caused by a simple recessive, and the term "merolepid" was given to it by Hobart Smith. It has shown up in several species so far.

Southern_Style Jan 07, 2009 03:01 PM

That's insane.... I kinda like it.

cenobite74 Jan 07, 2009 03:11 PM

So it is indeed an inheritable trait? I personally would think it was a birth defect more than anything. Kinda like having two heads.

I agree, there has to be a point where we draw the line on what's cool versus what's genetically detrimental to the animal (I have this same take on pugs for instance with complications that come from having smushed faces and all of the problems that go along with it). If the owner actually did not sell or breed the animal then I think that's really honorable, clearly he could've made a fortune off it.

comparing reptiles to dogs is pointless..nearly all purebreed dogs have detrimental side effects because of their breeding, from breathing problems due to squished faces, vision problems, hip diplasia (or however its spelled), and other ailments...

Far as anyone knows that derma ball didn't have any health issues. It was able to eat, move and breed like a normal ball python. The owner was attacked so viciously here he stopped posting to avoid the flaming. I was around when he first posted pics and removed so many attacking posts, its no wonder he disappeared off the face of the earth, or at least here. Though I think he sold the snake but not sure if that is true or not..

As it is most ball python morphs wouldn't survive long in the wild as natural camouflage would be non existent. No black eye or blue eye or red eyed snake would last long. Or even a common albino..which is why rarely do these kind of morphs survive past their first year in the wild.

Pastels, spiders, mojave etc are not much different from the normal type they can survive. But does it make the albino any less a morph or mutation than any other non typical ball python? No, they are all mutations.

Scaleless is a mutation seen in many animals (hairless is the same thing really, scales are just a different type of hair). Just about every animal has a hairless version, some made by selective breeding some naturally occuring species.

Will everybody like a scaleless snake? No..just as not everybody likes 'Leatherback' bearded dragons.

Aww you forget -- he claimed it bred, he claimed there were eggs -- guess it turned out not to be genetic after all.

Saw another one -- not sure if it's supposed to be kept secret or not so I won't say who owns it -- calls it the purple haze I believe - it's a 1200 gram female -- no scales very smooth - nicer looking -- hasn't been bred yet.

Is it not spelled dreamsicle?

And cenobite74 (George) after 20 years doing this you would think you would know your spelling by now.

cenobite74 Jan 07, 2009 07:45 PM

Guess I need to come in after work and rename all the corns i've given to Animal Trax!

My point originally was I have zero interest in any scaleless snake. They are ugly (personally) and could care less about the genetics.

Oh, but I can correctly spell newbie.

He produced the scaleless ball python "purple haze" and proved it simple recessive. I'm sure we will hear/see more as she is 1200g and he will be breeding her back to her father.

SnakeCharmer77 Jan 08, 2009 12:09 AM

well...

its interesting...
but its about as "cute" as those damn naked cats. i mean, they are cool, but they look like aliens...cats are supposed to have fur and snakes are supposed to have scales!

"the derma ball" sounds like some new age skin care product....
""buy your derma ball today- only 3 easyyy payments of $19.95!!!""
"wow! thanks to the derma ball i have great skin. i look better than i did when i was 21!""

*eye roll*

anyways...like i said, its interesting...but..eewwww...lol

no offense to the naked cat people...just MY opinion...

The Derma Ball did live and was proven genetic and I think that was were they stopped as it was not really humane to keep producing them . David
