Snake in his skin

downway69 Jan 07, 2009 07:39 PM

So my snake shed yesterday and I didn't take the skin out immediately. It was a large one piece clean shed like he always has. So when I got home today I noticed he had crawled back inside his skin and was literally just sitting in it. Anyone ever seen that before? I haven't and just found it to be very odd...but amusing!

it happened to me this year with a hatchling trans-pecos ratsnake the same day it shed )post hatching shed), it crawled back inside and appeared to be struggling, i was glad i found it when i did. after the groups second shed i found the same thing again, i am not sure if it was the same hatchling, but have an idea it was. I always liked leaving a shed skin in the cage because it seemed to me as if it would give the snake added security, knowing that it was his cage, his skin, his scent. now i tear off a small midsection piece of the skin and just leave that in their cages. Be careful! Earlier this year, a herper on the Kentucky Reptile Expo site posted a pic of a snake that had done the same thing and suffocated itself!
