Srange rat problem

jayfischerherps Jan 07, 2009 08:30 PM

I put three very pregnant females in a cement pan the other day. They looked fine the last two days. still had not dropped. Today I looked in on them, looked like they had dropped, but no babies. I looked closer and all three of them have swollen protruding rear areas. not prolapsed, but swollen, and all have full swollen mammary glands. After a closer look I would say some type of hormonal problem.
Anyone have any clues.
I have a pic of one,but it is not a clear as in person

Hi!
Hard to tell from just what you said but it sounds to me like they all gave birth and ate their young, possible due to stress from overcrowding, nervousness with so many new cage mates, or something along that line.

Swollen rear area could just be enlarged from recently giving birth and swollen mammary glands are from a lack of babies to suck the milk. If so, these areas should return to normal size within a few days.

The only other possibility that I can come up with is something in the bedding causing inflammation and possibly even causing the eating of their young.

If you're more advanced than what my reply sems to indicate, I apologize as I have no way of knowing. I surely don't mean to insult your intelligence.

Hang in there!

They are recovering I think. They had extremely swollen tissues and the mammary glands were hard to the touch. It really seamed like something caused a hormonal imbalance with all three. There was no birth or eating of babies,it is just three in a cement pan. They were so swollen it hurt them to examine them. At least they are recovering.
