Snake found in Florida

ReptiScott Jan 07, 2009 08:38 PM

Greetings,
A friend of mine who lives on the north shore of Tampa Bay, found this snake in her yard. She asked me what kind it was but I am unable to identify it. I am hoping someone here can help. It also looks like it has a growth or injury on it's mouth.
Thanks,
Scott

That is a harmless watersnake (Nerodia sp.) but I can't be sure off the top of my head which one it is. It looks like either a Salt-marsh Snake (N. clarkii) or a Banded Watersnake (N. fasciata).

It's mouth is a mess. Clearly it is trying to recover from a serious injury which led to an infection.

Thank you! I appreciate the information. I have let my friend know as she is a little twitchy around snakes. I love them and have two Russian Rats that I got as babies, 8 years ago. That is probably why she asked me. I am going there in February for a week. I hope to see some of these Salt Marsh beauties so I can get some photos.

Thanks again,
Scott

That salt marsh snake is in trouble with all those sores.
Maybe you can find some like these.
