Can I plug my Helix into a power strip?

Atlas511 Jan 08, 2009 12:05 PM

I Have three rack set up and two outlets in the entire room. I have one helix plugged in and two racks on that. The other helix has one on it. I have one display cage in the room and I want to put some lights in it.

Heres the Q? Can I plug a power stip into the wall and plug one helix into that? that way I can plug my lights into the power strip as well.....

I would recommend calling the company on that one, I've always plugged it straight into the wall to avoid any problems.

I have my herpstat on my incubator plugged into a battery back up power strip. If the power goes out I get a few hours that way. No problems here.

I like that idea alot, have you ever unplugged it to see how long you have?

will everything opperate correctly if plugged into a power strip.

Those backups are just power strips with battery backup built in so I don't see why not? If the company says not to, I wouldn't though.

as long as you don't surpass the maximum amp rating for the power strip you will be ok.

Was the incubator plugged into a helix or any t-stat then plugged into the power strip???? how can i find the amp rating on the strip?

thanks for the input everyone!

on American extension cords and power strips it should be on the face of the plug, could also be on the back side of the power strip.

DO NOT go over the max AMP rating, sometimes it's listed as MAX WATTS.

if you go over the manufacture's spec you can over heat the copper and melt the plastic casing thus causing a fire.

if you are not sure how many watts are in an amp within your circuit.....there's a formula.

Watts = Amps x Volts
Watts / Amps = Volts
Watts / Volts = Amps

US voltage alternates from between 110-120 volts

you should be fine

I think most thermostats recommend not plugging them into a power strip. However you can plug a power strip into a thermostat providing everything on the power strip don't exceed the wattage etc the thermostat can control.

But I do recommend checking with the manufacture website for your thermostat to be sure.
