finally finished

brick1 Jan 09, 2009 08:05 AM

except for a few heatmats and stats that im still waiting to get delivered. The room is finished. In theory i could go higher if needed, but really dont want to, as i wouldnt feel you could safely get the snakes out

the yearling rack, fits 33 containers, and anytime i had babies, can expand to 44, with some containers from ikea, same height, not as wide though. next two racks, fit 8 big tubs each, but i sort of stuffed up on my measurments, and the top level tubs are very very tight. So guess will just use for storage. Then 2 freezers on top of each other, got one for free and one for 20 euro from the local paper (no rodents in the main fridge anymore) Still have to do something with all the electrical cords running around everywhere aswell!!

The big cages, plan to upgrade within 6-12months, as can fit more cages in there, but also cos i feel these are too deep. I have to nearly crawl into them to clean at the big.

Looking good and yeah, the wiring is always a nightmare. One suggestion, get wire markers so you can tell what is what. Label BOTH ends of each cord so you don't have to undo any bundles to see which t-stat probe or power cord goes where.

accidentally sent before done.....

Another good option for wiring is velcro wire ties. Basically a long narrow piece of velcro with hooks on one side and loops on the other. Very easy to wrap up wires and duh, easy to undo and redo as things change.

I put as much as I can on wheeled bases so I can pull them out, That way all the wiring can be in the back and still be accessable.

yeah should have put wheels on, but didnt and probably wont know. The main problem is if anything escapes, gonna be right hard to get back.
As for wiring, yeah have started labelling all stuff. Im think of getting my electrician back anyway, as you really got wonder how many power strips you can actually run off one outlet!!
Also at some stage, i may need to put a fan in there, the houses here are so well insulated, the room might actually get too hot. But opening the window isnt really an option, as a its about minus 20 c outside, and also cos snow comes in when i do!! One plus though, is if we ever have blackout (which here is extremely rare) the house will keep its warmth for a few days!!
Am still waiting on a few more heatmats too arrive, then some snakes can go in there new tubs

Wow looks awesome!
did you build the racks by your self? or did you buy premade ones and put them together?
also
with all those tubs i hope you kept the lids!
incase you ever end up moving
and need to keep the snakes in their tubs

once again looks awesome though

nah made myself from scratch. Just bought a heap of melamine sheets, there were already the right width, so really no that many cuts involved.
Tubs are from ikea, didnt actually come with lids, but after putting that room together i have already decided im never moving house, and some of those racks are bloody heavy!!!

having never built a rack myself i dont know know but i would suggest start with picking out the size of tub you want. then figure where the rack is going to be put, this will give you an idea of what your looking at for overall size. once you have a guess to overall size and you know how big your tubs are start playing around with your measurements until it works, as far as how many levels and how wide.
