Female Black Tail Cribo

drphibes Jan 09, 2009 01:43 PM

I have a female BTC. I have never had a female snake before. I was wondering, will a female produce eggs without mating? If she does, will she lay them and they will just not be fertile? She is doing fine, just wondering what to expect. Thanks.

Usually not, but it is not unheard of. I have a corn snake that's never seen a male, and produced eggs. This is uncommon, but not unheard of. Much more rare would be a case of parthenogenesis or virgin births so to speak. This would be viable eggs produced. Like winning the lottery but it has been seen in a few species. Burmese pythons and komodo dragons are the two most recent oddball cases that have happened in this way.

But for the most part, if you don't breed the snake, there is not difference whether it is a male or a female apart from perhaps a male's desire to go off feed inthe spring to search for a mate.
