ASFs continued and Question

bigbearhook Jan 09, 2009 06:36 PM

Bellow I see a lot of debate over African Soft Fur Rats. I recently started a colony and for good reason. My wife is deathly allergic to normal rats.

Recently, we went into a local pet store. They were cleaning breeder rat cages that day. Within a couple minutes of breathing in there, my wife's throat swelled up to the point of almost suffocation. I had to rush her to the ER. She's fine, but I can't risk the death of my beloved just for rats. The ASFs don't bother her at all. She even has them almost hand tame(the breeders, not the feeders. That's just demented.)

I was wondering if anyone else has allergy issues with rats too?

My girlfriend is working at a local pet store and she can't clean the rat or mice enclosures because she gets a skin rash from doing it.

with an allergy like that of course you shouldn't breed rats in the house. ASF are just a convenient alternative so you can continue to keep snakes.

Depending on what part of the rat your wife is allergic too she may be fine if you feed frozen thawed..but I can see where you don't want to risk her life.
