Chlorhexidine question

Joel_Thomas Jan 10, 2009 05:03 PM

I have been using chlorhexidine gluconate for disinfecting and cleaning.

How much of a benefit is it to use the anti bacterial virucide chlorhexidine diacetate product?

Thanks for your replies.

Joel

Chlorhexidine diacetate has a wider bactericidal and virucidal spectrum of activity than the gluconate form. Also, the diacetate form can be used to clean wounds as well, but must be diluted down to a concentration of 0.05% before it can be used for this purpose. If you were using a 2% stock solution for example, this would be a 1 to 40 dilution with sterile water or distilled water. It’s really a matter of choice, but the diacetate form is slightly more effective for disinfection and wound cleaning purposes when diluted appropriately.
