Reading Material

Sunherp Jan 12, 2009 10:50 AM

I've been thinking about herp literature a lot lately, and I'm curious as to what everyone here is reading with regards to magazines and journals. I'm currently getting Herpetological Review, Journal of Herpetology, REPTILES, and IGUANA. What's everyone else reading?

I know there's been lots of discussion (especially on other forums) regarding the "dumbing down" of REPTILES in recent years, so I'm not going to delve into that and will leave my thoughts out. On the other hand, IGUANA, the journal of the International Reptile Conservation Foundation, is a pretty stellar publication. It's articles are engaging and the photography is top-notch. The writings are far from "dumbed down", but aren't as technical as Herp Review and JH (also great publications, for my fellow bio-nuts out there) and don't require degrees in biology and ecology to read. In my opinion, they're perfect for the intelligent and well-read hobbyist.

I should probably state that I'm NOT being paid or bribed in any way by the IRCF to make this plug.

I am reading a few, just nearly finished "The General Care and Maintenance of Common Kingsnakes"

I am about half way through "The Green Tree Python and Emerald Tree Boa: Care, Breeding and Natural History, Second Extended Edition".

And finished my REPTILES mag last week.

This iguana mag I will have to check out!!! Great thread BTW!

I really miss Vivarium Magazine and Louis Porras' FAUNA!
They were both a great read, but not too technical. I stopped getting Reptiles years ago. Something about their caresheet
articles, written for two year olds, that turned me off.
I have pretty much resorted to downloading PDF's and buying
books and journals on subjects I'm interested in through ebay.

Things sure have changed, huh, buddy?! LOL

Academic journals are great (although, as I said, super technical), but IGUANA is a sort of middle ground between them and REPTILES.

The Vivarium was killer - I wish it was still around. I've heard good things about the Euorpean magazine Reptilia, too.

Hey Cole,

Good question. I stopped getting Reptiles a while back for the same reasons you and others did. I wasn't aware of Iguana, I will have to check that out!

thanks

Do it, Dave! It's a quarterly publication at the moment, but worth every penny of the cost and every moment of reading.

Cole I think you should start thinking about writing yourself.I may subscribe to that.

There are some really great herp society journals as well.

Consider sniffing around to see what societies have in depth journals. I love the CHS Bulletin. Some articles are a slight bit over my head, but it is an entertaining read. I am not a total biology geek. I know there are other herp societies that also put out great publications, but the only one I can think of off the top of my head is CHS. I will ask the VP of the CHS and see what he mentions.
Chicago Herpetological Society.

Cindy,

Thanks for the tip. I know a lot of the bigger herp societies have some super publications. I'll check into the CHS.

give the man a Hot Topic -- havent had one here in a while either.

A gentleman AND a scholar. So Cole, what's your recommendation? Go long in gold or bail out in porkbellies before they go belly-up? See you at the club tomorrow . . . (LOL)

I'm sorry I let my Reptiles subscription lapse long ago, my kids liked that magazine.
Now IGUANA on the other hand, I won't let that lapse. Great herp magazine. The articles are interesting and well done, and the photography is outstanding. And minimal advertisement in IGUANA too.

I would also recommend CIGAR MAGAZINE.
