A little help please.....

draybar Sep 09, 2003 06:51 PM

I posted this picture on the field collecting forum and the general consensus seems to be lampropeltis calligaster rhombomaculata. Mole snake or mole king snake. I had originally thought nerodia but I wasn't suprised to find out that was wrong. It just didn't look right.
I have no reason to doubt their opinions I was just hoping to have a few more opinions on the subject.
Also, if it is a mole snake does anyone have any info on care?
Thanks

They are a lot like prarie kings. They are a lot like the getula kings, they are burrowers.

I think that it may have some calligaster calligaster in it. It may very well be an intergrade with calligaster and rhombomaculata. It has some distinct striping around the nuchal area as found in calligaster calligaster. Care for it should not be any different than any other kingsnake.
I wonder what everyone else thinks.

I would not totally discount a possible intergrade, but I have pure L.c.calligaster and L.c. rhombomaculata with some nuchal striping. I think the intergrade area would be in sw Tenn.?? At any rate, a nice find!
