Wild Box Turtle from NE Ohio....

garweft Jan 13, 2009 12:15 AM

Thought you'd enjoy this nice female I found herping in NE Ohio. She's from Portage Co. Ohio where there is no known record for the county. And yes before you ask, I left her alone after a few pics were taken. She is still a wild boxie

What a beautiful turtle! Nice find. You should report the sighting to your Ohio wildlife agency.

You might also want to report that to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Hugh Quinn, the curator, was doing a study on Box Turtles found in Metroparks. It is unclear if the turtles are released pets or actually populations. A few years ago the ODNR made a ruling that Ohioans had to PIT tag, register and pay an annual fee on eastern Box Turtles they own. It's easy to speculate that individuals who did not want to comply with this ruling simply released their turtles.
