Baby Bearded Dragon

WelshBoa May 24, 2003 11:29 AM

Well I decided to get my first baby bearded dragon today to add to my chameleon, tarantula's and boa's

What is an ideal-ish basking heat for a dragon. I've red that the adults bask at heats upto 110 farenheit but when my little un was in his tank (at around 100 farenheit) he seemed to have his mouth open as if he was either thermo-regulating or was hot.

I've lowered it now to around 90f but could someone tell me if this is too low?

As for feeding I've put a few crickets in but he/she doesnt seem that interested at the moment. I assume he is just acclimatising to his new surroundings. Should I remove the crickets or just leave them in there?

Thanks

well the basking spot should be at least around 105 degrees F...preferably around 110 degrees F..the cool side should be around 76 to 80 degrees...and should have a cave over here for them to escape the heat...what size tank do you have him in> and how big is he? about the crickets (b sure to supplement their crix with calcium and d3 supplements, and be SURE to have a UVB Reptisun 5.0 or other flourescent UVB light in there, its a must!!) the crickets could be left in there, but if they are not eaten by lights out, take them out, because they can nibble on your baby as he sleeps. Either today or tomorow, start giving him a salad with watercress, collard greens, mustard greens, endive, apples, yellow squash, and other nice calcium rich nutritious veggies and fruits, chopped finely up. and then tomorow try giving him crickets (no bigger than the space between his eyes) and see if he will eat them....he is probably j/ adjusting right now...GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thanks both for your replies! Yes the Dragon has a brand new reptisun 5.0 flourescent tube.

The Dragon is only about two weeks old that I got from a friend of mine. I have him in a small tank which is inside a 4' tank so the UV tube is over him. I have a basking spot light hanging over this tank as well.

The reason his tank is inside the bigger one (and nothing else is inside this tank is that I thought it would be better to regulate the heat.

I've taken out the crickets now as lights out. A heat mat under his cage should be sufficent over night shouldn't it?

Is the dragon too young to eat veggies at the moment?

Hi
abit confusing how you have him housed?!?!
tank insside other tank ?
better split the biggertank in 1/2 !!??
also no heat at night is recomended .
only when temp drop below the 50-55 then you can use nightheat .
a good baskingspot 115-110 measure it with a thempreader with a extra probe a indooroutdoor type .
and reptisun nearby so not farther away then 12 inches should do the trick(i think ) .
byeeeee

Yeah well basically I got a 4' long tank. I was gonna just seperate half of this with some cardboard. However thought the crickets may escape through the various gaps so put dragon in one of those PetPals with UV light hanging over with bulb so nothing can escape
