pond water

tbone21 Jan 13, 2009 03:55 PM

What kind of water does everyone use for their ponds with their crocs. Do people just use tap water from a hose or go get fresh water from like pond or stream or treat the water with something?

I live out in the country so we have a well. Unfortunately our quality of water sucks. Extremely hard. Plus we're in the middle of a three year drought so...
This fall I picked up a 500 gallon watertank on a trailer.
Now I just drive down to the creek about 1/4 mile away and pump water out of the creek.
I don't know if they like it more but their skin looks much better(not so dried out).
This is not to say I won't top off an enclosure with well water because I will. But 90% comes from the creek.D.C.

Hi Danny,

How long does the 500 gallon tank last until you have to redo it? We have had a dry summer/fall/winter-so far here as well. I have pumped alot of water and am building another shallow water well just for the ponds.

Our water isn't as hard as yours it seems but we also have natural rainwater cycled into the pools. How deep is your well?

Have you considered a water softner?

Hey Chris
During the winter I'm just topping off most of the pools. Some of the smaller crocs eat year round so I change their water. But still not very often maybe once every 2 weeks.
In the summer all are being changed weekly some twice a week. One 500 gallon tank will fill 3 pools. So I may make 3 trips a week to the creek. I have a sump pump even though all the pools have drains with the sump pump I can water the trees. They love gator water.
I'm not sure how deep my well is. My neighbor across the street has great water. They drink straight from the tap. A softner would help and we discussed a "super" filter many times with the company that works on our well. I guess I feel like it is throwing good money after bad.
Much more concerned about heating issues. Only mid Jan. and we have already been in the twenties 18 times!!!
That's crazy that is usually for the year. So not only was 2008 the third driest year in Kerrville history. This winter is shaping up to be the coldest in 20 years.
Last months electric bill, $875.00
Once again that is a Feb. electric bill not Dec. this month will be over $1,000.00
My wife hates me in the winter. And while I claim I can't afford a fancy wood burning hotwater heater like yours. With these bills how can I not afford one.

We have had an abnormal number of cold nights this year as well, fortunately they have all been sunny dry days with the exception of one.

You could have bought one of the water heaters with electric bills in that range. I wish I wouldhave thought about it I sold one of my three and would have gladly gave you the croc guy discount. I think I sold it for $500.

I really would like to come out your way and see you animals.

$500.00 I would have bought that in a second.
It's the $3,000.00 I'm having a problem with and then I'll need at least two.
We have had nice sunny days as well which if it isn't going to rain I prefer. I hate that cloudy but no rain stuff like we're having this weekend.
Come down anytime. Spring or summer is better. This place will look like a woekzone but it always does. To many projects.
Nothing new or interesting lately just trying to maintain what I have. I wonder how Talkas Cubans are doing?
Danny
