now you have me thinking

Here in Prince Edward Island, the power goes out with practally every storm. What should we do in case of a power outage.
It only happened once and for a short period of time because of a car accident (10 min) but Roan freaked. He was cruising the cage when it happened, and he started blindly climbing as fast as he could. We shined a flashlight in, but it didn't seem to help.
what should our emergency stash of goodies consist of? Would a small generator be over reacting?

Actually it isn't. That is a very wise idea when you keep animals with heating/lighting requirements. Thats the first idea that came to my head. Bingo? Get a generator. If your wallet lets you....or ur parents.

I don't worry too much about lighting, and if it stays dark for a while he will simply settle down and sleep. Heat is the bigger worry if the power will be out for many hours, so I find a neighbor who has backup heat of some type and talk to them about bringing over a pet in a box or a small bird cage in an emergency. I cultivate a friendly relationship with them ahead of time and keep a box with perch etc. in a closet just in case. If the power is out for a short time I just drape a blanket over the cage to keep it from chilling too fast. Be glad you don't have a wild rescue toucan to do this with...catching and handling this raven-sized boy is interesting to say the least.
