am i being impatient?

JonathanPG Jan 15, 2009 01:45 AM

ok i have bred my two females with two other males since oct 2008, i don't want to say "several times" have i seen copulation occur but i have recorded maybe 4 or 5 times EACH since oct 2008, i have not observed ovulation in any female, its already JAN and maybe im being impatient but this is going to be my second year attempting to breed, the females are both 2 1/2 years old, they weigh 18-1900 grams each and i did cool them, so waht gives here help me out, i know i may sound impatient but i have waited since last year for this year and nothing so far, all your info is much appreciated, thanks again. oh and they both have not eaten for about 2 weeks now, thanks.

Being impatient is part of the game, my friend. Learning what to do with yourself is the tricky part.

Keep at it. You may have missed the ovulation or it may not have come yet. Either way there is no reason to stop putting them together now. It can take all winter before anything happens. Look at how many people posted "late" clutches here in the last couple months. These are clutches that were not laid until either late summer or fall.

Don't give up. Give them until mid-spring at least. That's what I do. If I don't observe anything or they don't lay by March I keep running the males through the females until there isn't any more snow on the ground... I'm in Minnesota - so it can be a while sometimes.

Which part of this frozen tundra do you call home? I'm in the SE corner.

I'm near Mankato - South Central Minnesota. It's currently 6 degrees outside and it feels like a heat wave. The past few days have been averaging -25 degrees and the windchill has brought that down to -45 degrees.

I hate the cold, but the snakes are going at it like it's their last chance so I'm not complaining too much!

My very earliest girls don't usually ovulate until mid-March - with most of them ovulating in April and May -- so there is still plenty of waiting to be done - be patient - I know - easier said than done.

I say you are being impatient, especially if this is the second year you have been trying to breed these females..if they are only 2 1/2 years old now..this time last year they would be far too young to breed (being only a year and half old last year at this time). In general I think females should be at least three years old..and at least 1500 grams...not one or the other.

But as others suggested, keep putting your males in regularly till they show no more interest in the female or you get eggs, whichever comes first.

Yes you are being a bit impatient (aren`t we all). I start pairing my balls up in late Nov. every year and the very earliest i get eggs is late May.
