Ebony question

cfr Jan 15, 2009 12:24 PM

Stumble across a couple of pics of the ebony ball last night. It is definitely one of my favorite morphs! What are the genetics behind this one?

They have not been able to duplicate them -- so it appears to be a fluke.

you said "them". How many are there? What were the adults?

mikebell Jan 15, 2009 12:45 PM

They were produced by Amir. They are a YB crossed with something else. It was many years ago and I don't know if the original parents have been bred again, or if they even still exist.

A super cinny or super black pastel should satisfy your need for a solid dark snake.

True, super cinny or black pastel would suffice for a solid dark snake, but the pic I saw of Amir's ebony had a "gold" stripe down the back and faint remnants of pattern down the sides. It's this contrast that truly make it beautiful for me.

Amir has one Graziani has one -- they've both tried to reproduce them and have had no luck.

Yes

Oh, was not aware of there being two different lines. I have not seen Graziani's. Did they originate from the same type of crosses?

Thanks for all your info, by the way.

toshamc Jan 15, 2009 01:45 PM

If I remember correctly Grazianis came in with a bunch of melanistic snakes so he assumed it was just another melanistic snake until he saw Amirs ebony -- Amirs came from a YB x Granite -- it was somewhere in 06/07 that they bred them out and disproved them as being genetic -- Greg mentioned in a radio interview that they theorized that perhaps it was sever egg dehydration that lead to the hypermelanism. And that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

That's unfortunate. That would be a great morph to work with if it were genetic, especially combined with lav albino.

Thanks again for the info

So, if this cross does not produce ebony, does anyone have pix of what the non-ebony cross looks like? I LOVE dark balls!!!

The Granite YB is just that - a more speckled yellowbelly.

Thanks for the pics Becky! Nice looking girl you have there. What are your breeding plans for her? I am going to try my graphite with a dark morph granite next year to see what the orangebelly influence does to the granite.

Derek,

Here is a pic of a captive hatched male from 07 that
I was able to get my hands on. I was told Amir saw it
in person and said it was an Ebony. I hope to find out
this year.

From what I understand Amir sold the original YellowBelly
male that helped in making the Ebony ..so who knows if he
would have been able to pair up the same animals and produce
another one.

David,

I would agree that yours is indeed an ebony based on Amir's. His was a little darker with a more complete stripe, but yours is no less beautiful. Good luck in your efforts to reproduce it. What are you going to pair it with first, dark granite, or yb? Keep us informed of your success.

Thanks Derek!

I decided to breed to him to normal females
first so I can decipher what genes (if any)
I'm working with. His belly indicates that
he could have YB in him..time will tell.
I'll definitely post pics if he proves to
be genetic in one way or another.

Amir, has not been able to reproduce the ebony. Which is bad news for me. I purchased this snake from him hoping to produce ebonys. She was a clutch mate to the ebony. Finally up to size this year, mouser and picky at times, hopefully she will produce for me this year. I have her with a pastel ivory. I have multiple lock ups, so only time will tell.

Good luck Marshall. I, for one, will be cheering for you to succeed getting an ebony or two. I would love to see someone reproduce that look, even if it takes selective line breeding. I am trying my hand at it with a dark granite female and my graphite male. Whatever your outcome, that is a nice looking snake and will produce some beautiful babies from that pairing. Please post pics of them when they hatch.
