The Perfect Chameleon Enclosure

Uneek78 Sep 09, 2003 08:28 PM

I'm tryin' to figure out the perfect way to set up my chameleon environment. I wanted to use real plants, but I do not know how feasable this will being that I'll have a glass terrarium w/ screens on both sides. Will the Chameleon be fine w/ soil? Does the enclosure need grass? What kind of plants are the easiest to obtain and most used? What are you all using? I don't want to use carpet. I want the environment to be attractive and as real as possible. What do you all have in your enclosures? I was told to go to Lowe's to find the right plant. I just need some help. If you feel you have the ultimate enclosure, please post a pic!

Here is my free range setup. I have close to 7 foot ficus tree and they are in a large wooden tub I built which is lined with plastic to hold the water from the misting system. The lights and misting system are controlled viw my computer with x10 home automation software. The first week or so he pretty much explored my whole room I would find him in all kinds of places, now that he has associated the tree with food, water and light he stays put. This is in my bedroom, but having a full time job and being a student I pretty much only sleep in there so during the say he doesnt get stressed.

Nice.... Good job. I just fininshed building an outdoor sunning cage (actually 4 connected together) for 4 large chameleons (for my fall maybe even winter and for my spring months). I've gotta get some pics of it and show you guys. Gimime a few days.

This is my montium enclosure. It's a basic full screen cage with a sheet of polystarine on the back to stop leaking when misted. It has a ficus and a hibiscus in there - both great live plants to use, There is also an air plant at the bottom which your can just see. On the bottom there is a very thin layer of the substate 'forest bed' its a soil type substrate, its there to soak up some of the moisture that hits the ground. Paper towls are best but i tend to find this easier to use. Then i have added a bunch of Twigs and branches to fill up the space, then a basking spot light with reflector, and a UV floresent light with a reflector, and Voila, thats all you need. This cost me all around £80 which is about 130 US$. Cheap, natural looking, and it does the job.

this is roans cage, it's a little dark in the shot since we don't like to use flash around him! It's about 5 feet high, 3 1/2 feet wide and 3 feet deep

this is Zoe's Deeeluxe apartment...

It stands 6ft high, and is 2ft wide, 2ft deep.
Top, bottom, and two sides are screen, the other two sides are lucite panels.
It is painted in "marine" paint, so it is waterproof. But this type of paint took forever to cure...so I don't think I'd use it again.
Zoe seems SO much happier in this enclosure than he did in that God awful glass tank that he came to me in!!!

(BTW...thanks again Dad for building the cage for me!!!)
