I can tell you about the V.a. acanthurus or Australian ridge-tailed monitor. They live in the desert, meaning you have to put sand and rocks in there (option of course as they are adaptive). Males are territorial. They are a bit expensive, I would say ummm $650-$750 range. Hehe. breeding them isn't too hard but it isn't too easy lol. Basking area 120 F. Wait wait. Let me stop here. If you want to know more tell me. I'm going to listen to some music and do work. Laters.

I am very interested. Varanus acanthurus acanthurus is somthing I would like to get into... but this would be my first as all my other herp projects have been with the leggless ones (snakes) Do you think it would be a challenge? Well all help would be greatly appricated. and I am still open to all other aussie monitors as long as I have somthing to learnAlso I wouldn't mind putting down a little money I am sure they would be well worth it.

thank again

Splended! If you are really serious and not pulling my tail (evolution has it so we lost ours). They happen to be quite easy to raise but you must be warned, they love the sun so lighting with UVA UVB is a must. They bask the whole day if it is cool. They are bright pigmented 88F-94F in the summer. Basking spot as I have said is 110F. Night time temperature into the 70's. They won't run and hide as much as some other monitors and will lift their heads to see predators from far away. He always does this when I go in and out so thats why i'm saying this. If the enclosure is large, a male can be kept with many females. Remember, they are territorial. They don't lay many eyes, max would be 8 or so. Babies being very tiny. 3 inches? Eggs hatch in 80-90 days (2.5-3 months). Ideal room temperature is 82-90F and begin eating in the range of 24 hours. They will eat insects and mice. Any other info ask on. I'm going to watch The OC hehehe.

I mean eggs not eyes lol.

however, I really agree with the below posts. You are giving out a lot of false info. Im not sure why you speak so confidently when dispensing horrendously atrocious "information". Please, take a few years of actually working with an animal before you start advising others.
Its for your benifit as well as others.

Humble regards,
Michelle

What do you know?

Monitors need UV? They bask ALL day?

Damn, mine are defective. I should get rid of them and get some 'normal' ones...

Ackies are not normally desert lizards, that is a rarity. Heck they occur in the kimberly to Darwin. Does rain alot there. In fact, Its very common to find ackies in sight of crocodiles. Desert crocs, hahahahahahahahaha.

Please person(not goon) crack open a book. But wait, i must wash the dog. F

So much good information.

How many of the ackies that you hatched have you sold for $650-750. Being that breeding them is easy. Do you have pictures to prove it?

Gosh I got a steal for mine, they were much cheaper, but I don't find breeding anything to be all that easy. Perhaps you could share some tips on how you have been so successful?

How long after they hatch before you can potty train them?

Geez, this is getting out of hand now. In the past week this guy has been on here asking countless common sense questions and now all of a sudden he is a monitor expert. Let's just spit out advice, is your advice coming from your head or your a**. I hate to be harsh or what not but come on let's get real, people don't want advice from people that consistantly need advice. So let's see, the past week or so, you needed advice on water and niles, and now it is apparent that you need a little advice on ackies. Better get the buckets because your ship is sinking faster than you can give advice.

I got this all from a book on monitors so its a book against your words. Seriously, you guys need to calm down, tripping too much. Just because you couldn't add jack or your family has issues doesn't mean you gotta take it out on me. Why don't you three go get some help and do some screaming in the mirror, it'll feel better.

I don't simply make info up, comes all from research and books. Information varies from one location to another. Probably you're information was found elsewhere. I mean for ex: The value of gold here is different from somewhere else. You might sound correct one place but wrong somewhere else. People calm down, nothing to get worked up about. Do some growing up would ya. I'm only 18 and I seem to have more class than a bunch of you. I only know monitors that I KEPT. Not those that I haven't. Many talking to some of you is a waste of time! BLAH BLAH BLAH!

The price for this monitor varies from one place to another. The price I've given you are for adults. Babies are a lot cheaper.

"I got this all from a book on monitors so its a book against your words."

Could you please give the name of the book so people can know which books to stay away from. I would put my word up against that book anyday of the week.

"I don't simply make info up, comes all from research and books."

Research? What kind of research have you done? Typing in "Ackie" on Google is not research. Looking at a caresheet is not research.

"Information varies from one location to another. Probably you're information was found elsewhere. I mean for ex: The value of gold here is different from somewhere else."

Our information comes from actually keeping and breeding these species. Not from what somebody else wrote or said. So the "value" or being wrong is accepted other places? I mean come on nobody wants false information, no matter where your at. Inexperienced and uneducated advice has no value to anyone!!!

"I only know monitors that I KEPT. Not those that I haven't. Many talking to some of you is a waste of time! BLAH BLAH BLAH!"

Alright then what are you currently keeping? (how long?) We already know that you can't keep a baby nile caged, you already said earlier. (they escaped) So could you please inform all of us immature people here what your mom is currently funding and letting you keep. This should have never been a discussion, all you have to do is realize that you don't know squat therefore you don't have room to tell other people how to care for animals.
