Caging Question: Where do you find Dowels?

Alan Sep 09, 2003 08:50 PM

Just a silly question, but where does everyone find the wooden
dowels to attach to the cages (or plastic Rubbermaid containers)
for their GTP's???? And how do they get attached???
Any help is appreciated....

I buy mine at walmart. They're something like $1 for a 3-foot rod.

As far as attaching them, you can either use a plastic/rubber end piece (just cut it in half and attach it to the enclosure) or get a set of those mounting brackets for shower curtains.

You can get wodden dowels at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, or any kind of home improvement type store.

There are several different ways of mounting them in your cages. One of the most common is to get the plastic shower curtain rod hangers and attach those to the sides of the cage, and lay the dowel into them. Some people will simply screw the dowels in through the cage walls(assuming your cage is made of a material that allows for this). I have also seen some cages where a hole is cut on both sides of the cage that is the diameter of the dowel, and the dowel is fed through there and rests in the cage walls. You can also make a dowel grid.

I personally use the plastic curtain rod holders and pvc or natural wood branches for my perches. The rod holders are secured with silicon and the perches simply lay right inside.
