E. c. gaigei PICs

Jeff Clark Jan 16, 2009 01:04 AM

Peruvian Rainbow Boas, Epicrates cenchria gaigei. Most Peruvian Rainbows offered for sale are really Brazilian Rainbows, E.c.cenchria. Peruvians have fewer and larger scales than Brazilians. Many of them grow larger than Brazilians and large adults often have very large heads. Most of them that I have positively identified with low scale counts have also had very distinctly darker and more pronounced markings. These markings are most obvious on the heads. Some Brazilians do have very dark markings like this. The low scale counts are the only way to positively identify the gaigei subspecies. Whenever I see Peruvians for sale that seem to be the real deal I buy them. This first one is a 2005 female.

This one is a 2006 female. She was shy and did not have her head out so you could see the nice dark markings.

A breeder had 2008 babies for sale and I got ten of them. He said the parents had low scale counts and he had gotten them from the same stock as some of my adults. The PICs he showed of the babies and adults looked right. I have not yet done scale counts on these but I am pretty sure they are really gaigei. My intent was to sell most of the 10 I bought. I sold two of them right after I got them. Since then I have become attached to the rest of them and cannot part with them. These are PICs of four of them that have shed in the last day or two.

Hey Jeff,

Wow, that 2005 female may be the ultimate rainbow boa, at least
in my opinion. If I were in the market for a new snake, I would be trying to talk you out of one for sure.

Thanks for sharing,
Ed

It's supposed to be 9 degrees here tonight.

Just when I thought we weren't going to have a winter...

Thanks,

Also depends if there is an earthquake or not.

Seriously, I visited the Bay area once, it was awesome.
Sunny and 70 every day. If it weren't so damn expensive...

Thanks,
Ed

Yeah, gorgeous weather but if you don't already own a place, good luck saving up enough for a down payment, let alone affording the mortgage. I was extremely fortunate to have purchased at a very low point in the market 14 years ago, even with the slump my house could likely sell for twice what I paid for it. Enough in equity to leave and buy another place in a less expensive area.

But then again, I cringe at the thought of......

1) moving the collection.
2) trying to sell the house with the collection inside, can't ya just see the buyers running away screaming?

haha, ive always thought the same, i will probably ended up selling where i am in about 18months, but will need to sell before i buy. Seeing that 20% of the apartment is taken up with snakes, i really wouldnt know what to do.

You can just imagine a realtor seller your property, by showing people around the whole place except for one room with a big lock on it

It's hot/humid here during the summer, and winters are sometimes cold, but it's more affordable than a lot of urban/suburban areas. My mortage payment is less than the price of an anery BRB.

Yeah, selling and moving would be a pain for you. You'd probably have to move first, then sell the old house. But
you know, for a small fee, you can always ship me a few of your snakes and I can take care of them while you show the house.

Thanks,
Ed

Aren't they still in the thousands of dollars each?

I worked from home when I lived there, the commute was a snap!

The bay area is easily my favorite place of the places I've lived. I promised the dogs we'd leave after 5 years if we couldnt afford a place with some space for them. We left in 2003, about 3 weeks shy of 5 years. I still miss it. The traffic wasnt all that bad, I think Atlanta is much worse.

You definitely bought at the right time. I doubt it'll ever slump low enough that I'll be able to afford a big enough place to make it worth to moving back. Then there's that whole ferret thing...

The idea of people coming into my house to look around makes me laugh. The reality is that I'll have to buy a new place before I could ever put this one on the market. The cattle dogs and weasels are outside, but the realtor would still have a coronary, I'm sure! hehe...

Hey Dave - It was 24 Below zero here last night - and I still needed sunglasses on today. It was the sun's glare off the snow is what made things so brite. The good news is that is has warmed up to 1 degree above zero!

The convertable is stored along with the motorcycles - so yes at times I wish I was in a warmer climate.......

It is going down to the low 20s here tonight. Coldest so far this winter. I have the gas logs burning in the fireplace.

Here too. I had to put a heater in my well house last night, the insulation didnt cut it. At least it'll be over soon.

Last night on the news the weather guy said "44 straight hours of below freezing temperatures". He said it twice. As a native Detroiter who spent the holidays in that arctic mess, that put me into fits of laughter! My native Rhode Island other half and I kept repeating that and laughing....44 straight hours, oh no, we're all gonna die!!!

Tonight's gonna suck, it'll be warm again tomorrow.

I grew up in NJ, so I can relate. I'm sure there will be a run on the grocery stores just in case a few snowflakes fall!

Stay warm,
Ed

Hi Jeff,

Very nice looking Rainbow boas you have Jeff. I don't know to much info on this guy I own excepted he is 6 foot 6 inches long, 10 lbs and I was told he was born in 1999 and that he was a BRB. I just assumed he was a Brazilian but the few Peruvian pictures I have seen look more like him. He is just a family pet and no plans on breeding him so that is why I never checked his scale count out. Here are a some pictures of my Rainbow boa named Armstrong.

Take care
Tom

Tom,
...What a great looking snake. Lots of things do look like he could be a Peruvian. He is big, though not too big for a 10 year old Brazilian. He has nice dark markings and looks like he has big scales. You can almost count scale rows just looking at your PICs. Most Brazilians have 45 to 51 scale rows at midbody and most Peruvians have 41 to 43. There are snakes out there that have 44 or 45 midbody scale rows and are impossible to tell for sure.
