WC red bull in MT

Sunherp Sep 09, 2003 09:17 PM

A friend of mine recently captured the most intense red phase hatchling bull I've ever seen. The snake was found just outside Lamedeer, MT, on the Cheyanne Indian Reservation. Hypererythrism would not necessarily be selected against in this area because much of the soil and rock formations have a red tint due to iron content. It isn't hypomelanistic as it has all of the normal black pigmentation, but red/pink replaces nearly all of the white/yellow on the rear 3/4 of the body. It literally glows pink. Just thought you all might find it interesting.

Cole,

Your friend may want to check the laws regarding collection of a snake on the reservation. Most tribes have laws that are very strick about removal of any thing if you are not a tribal member. I would be surprised if USFWS has not already contacted you or your friend based on this forum post.

At any rate post a picture so that we can all shrare in the snakes beauty!!!

Cheers, Ginter

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe we'll see a photo of his new cellmate.

Yeah, then explain how the north justifies the illegal making of West Virginia into a state? Humph!

they've been doing things illegally from the very start so why should they stop now or ever. If California wasn't so apathetic (pathetic)during the Civil War,maybe we would actually have the right to pass herp laws and regulations that make sense. But then again, if states had the right to govern themselves more (as they hopefully would have gotten out of getting out of the union), that might give state people like yourself too much freedom to actually help to manage and protect our wildlife resources. If they weren't worried about the things you could do both good and bad in a short time given just a little more freedom, who knows what could and would happen? I did crinch a little when I read indian reservation on the post. You can't even be on one, in some cases, without permission. As far as W. Virignia being made a state illegally, we thought anyone in Louisiana says anybody north of the stateline is a yankee so we thought it would make ya'll happy. We can't seem to do anything to make ya'll happy. LOL.

The reservation system is a screwey deal here in MT. Our reservations are patchwork of Tribal owned and non-Indian land thanks to homesteader rights given to caucasians by the gvt. I imagin it makes things very confusing for local Fish and Game agents and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. If an animal were poached from the reservation it could and SHOULD be handled sharply by local authorities. Another example of how important it is to know local laws before you attempt to collect something from the wild.
