Leo Licking herself Raw,,, Advice?

bellatheleo Jan 16, 2009 08:35 PM

I've had My Leo for 6 months or so, it's about ten months old. I fed her a few nights ago and the nect morning I was lookin at her and it looked odd her nose was like pink, not green AND keeps licking her nose. SO i'm wondering if its normal for her to lick her nose and for that to happen from so much of it. ....

I'm sorta concerned because I am pretty new at this lizard stuff. But any help would be great

Interesting...

Could you give a complete run down of your set up?

- Tank size?
- Substrate?
- How is it heated?
- What are the temps on the floor of the hot side? The cool side?
- What type of thermometer are you using (digital or otherwise)?
- How many hides do you have?
- What does the diet consist of?
- what types of supplements do you use?

Could you possibly post a picture of the nose?

Also - you mentioned that the nose is "pink not green" Im a little confused, because leos are not green...

well shes ( I actually belive its a male from all the discriptions) a dark yellow which to me sorta resembles a green tinge. I have two hides, 2 water dishes, i feed her meal worms up until today I'm trying out super worms. I use some sort of powder supplement and also one for water. calsi sand, I just changed her tank around so maybe she just skratched her nose on her new water dispencer... I cant seem to get a great photo of her but i'll try and post some of how she is in her environment

Whoever told you that sand was ok for a juvenile leo didn't know what they were talking about. Change that to paper towels, reptile carpet, or tile ASAP. (I even keep my adult on paper towels - she means too much to me to risk impaction from ingested substrate.) That's probably not the cause of the nose issue, but it's definitely a risk you don't want to be taking.

What about heat?
How is it heated? What are the temps? Are you using a digitl thermometer?

As the other poster stated, sand is dangerous for leos under a year old - and calci-sand is dangerous for leos of any age. Its been shown over and over again to cause impactions that sometimes even result in death, it also can scratch your leo because its rough and can cause eye infections etc. If she has a sore on her nose the calci-sand can also further an infection.

Swtich out the calci-sand, safe options include paper towels, tile, non adhesive shelf liner, or reptile carpet.

She should also have three hides - one on the warm side, one on the cool side, and a humid hide. A humid hide can be constructed out of a tupperware container with a hole cut in the side, lined with damp paper towels. This aids with shedding.

If you could get a pic that would be very useful.

Definately change the substrate, check the temps and add a humid hide. Monitor the mouth carefully - mouthrot can sometimes appear as a "scratch" or "scab" to start with.

If its just a minor abrasion it should heal pretty quickly on its own, providing her temps are good and the substrate is cheanged, etc. If it does not heal or begins to look worse then she should see a herp vet asap.
