Vet Expense

geekgrl72 Sep 09, 2003 09:21 PM

I know that there is no set answer (price) because it's dependent upon the vet, but I was wondering what the average cost is to take a leo to the vet to be tested for worms. Mine is still not eating and although he's very lively and energetic, he is losing weight. Worms don't work anymore and crickets haven't worked for a month. He's eaten maybe 4-5 worms in the last month and that's it... I appreciate any input.

if you think he has worms, you can treat him with panacur, if he doesn't have worms, it wont hurt him. a fecal from a vet usually costs me about $30.

Where can I find panacur other than through the vet? I can't imagine any other reason why his eating habits would change so drastically. He's not impacted because since he shed (and ate that) he's gone 3 times. The only thing I can't rule out on my own is the worms part.

you can try a petco or any petstore, im not sure, i've never bought it.

I think farm supplies stores usually have it, not pet stores... but usually for horses so you have to really alter the dosing.

Anyway, I'm paying $40 for an initial visit and $15 per fecal.

I think most vets charge between $25-60 for the initial and $5-$30 for the fecals, but you'll have to see. It may depend on your area, also, but be careful because many vets don't really know reptiles too well, so either choose a herp vet or be very careful. And talk to the vet prior to setting up an appointment, anyway.

Good luck and I hope your leo feels better

The average price for a fecal exam is about $15... you may also have to pay for an office visit, that just depends on the vet. And if you need meds you will have to pay for that as well.

You can get liquid panacur from farm supply stores, but it costs about $100 for a jug, as they do not sell it in small quantities.

You can get panacur paste from The Bean Farm online.

Good luck.

If you get it from a feed store/farm supply it will be called Safe Guard.

Good luck.

Well, there's 2 local vets that I found through Herp Vet Connection from links on this site so I would probably call both of those to be sure that they are still currently caring for herps as well as other animals. I would probably be hard pressed to find to find Panacur around here since it's mostly city and having lived here most of my life, I haven't seen a farm supply store anywhere. I'll probably just take him to the vet because even if I had the panacur, I wouldn't know how to dose him. I just can't afford a $200 or so vet bill since I just had surgery and lost my job because of it. Thanks, everyone, for your input.

I live in Miami and there's a farm supply near me, so I don't doubt you'll find one. But, like mentioned, they probably do sell the stuff in huge supplies, so forget that anyway.

Just go through your yellow pages and look for vets that handle exotics or reptiles. Call them each up and ask for prices. A bad vet is better than no vet, but it can also be a waste of money. Ask them how much they charge to treat the animals (with meds), also.

It cost me $72.50 for the last office visit, the medication, and the fecel. Just make sure the vet knows what they are doing. You can buy panacur at the bean farm it is much cheaper than you vet they chargerd me 12.50 for a tiny amount but I needed it so I am just gonna buy from bean farm. Anyone know how to break it down for leos?

I would recommend just buying it from your vet, or go the route I did and buy a jug of it from a farm supply store (I have tons of pythons, geckos, and now hognose so I go through the stuff).

I originally bought a tube of panacur from the bean farm, it comes in paste form. The concentration is the same as the liquid 100mg/ml, so dosing is no different, but it's a lot harder to get the geckos to take the paste than the liquid.
