what size for small snakes ?

snake_bit Jan 17, 2009 08:23 AM

I'm thinking of switching over from 7 gal tanks( I keep mostly NA milks)to plastic boxes. My milk snakes are mostly 20 - 30 inches so I dont need big ones.
I will still keep some glass tanks because I like being able to see the snakes.
What size do you guys use and is one brand better then another? What about cost ?

As I look at this photo I notice that I cant see the snakes even in the glass because they are all hiding anyway.Sometimes the snakes are out though and it can be a good indication that they are hungry. Also glass helps during breeding

Doug,

Have you seen a rack built around the Cambro storage boxes? The Cambros are clear polycarbonate and make an excellent compromose between the advantages of a rack and the display features of a tank.

They are expensive but there are some online sources that are cheaper than others.

I also really like the 9" tall size for better viewing but you can get them in 3" and 6" tall as well.

I plan to build a rack around these boxes at some point for NA Milksnakes. I only have a subadult pair of Pale Milksnakes right now so I'm not in a huge hurry.

I plan to build the rack so the 26" x 18" box can slide in widthwise. That will also allow two of the 12" x 18" boxes to slide in length wise. So either one large or two half-sized boxes per level.

I will try to find a picture of a Cambro box rack later this morning.

I could not find the picture I was thinking of. Here is one built around the 3" tall (I think) Cambros. Personally I would use the 6" or 9" tall boxes for a more open view to the back of the boxes. Especially nice during breeding as you said.

If you look at the first three levels you can see three different sized boxes. In the 9" tall sizes you only have two choices -- basically the same boxes in levels 2 & 3 but 9" tall. Same choice in 6" tall if I remember correctly.

Ironically I'm just now trying to save the Pale Milk pictures off of my friend's Flickr account -- he took pictures when he was here in the fall. But Flickr seems to have some sort of copyright block so I may have to wait for the originals.

Email me if you want me to send you direct links.
