Sexing question?

SKYFIRE_1 Jan 17, 2009 11:25 AM

Hi, I'm a snake man thinking about getting a couple of Leo's in the near future. So you may see me post a few newbie questions.

1) Is there a certain age a Leopard Gecko needs to be before it can be sexed?

2) Do Leo's prefer to be kept alone, or with another Leo? Such as 1.1, or 0.2?

Sexing can vary with different leos. Typically anywhere from 4-8 months is a good time to start sexing.
Also, leos thrive by themselves, but keeping more than one is not a problem as long as you have the correct environment set-up. Never keep males together unless they've been together since birth. And don't keep a male and female unless you plan on hatching some eggs. A 20-gallon long aquarium would be perfect for one leo, or anything with those dimensions or greater.

They can be sexed from 6-12months, depending on how quickly they mature.

They do best if housed alone. Groups of females can be housed together as Patrick said if you have the proper set up. However, this should be left to more advanced keepers - for your first leo i would start with just one.
