I use a couple of utility lights from the hardware store with fluorescent bulbs so I don't need a flash. Make sure your background works for your subject...you can do some great pics with any camera.

What will help you most is to read a book on digital photography and lighting , it will help you understand what you are trying to do better . David

I personally have always been a Canon person, granted there are tons of great cameras out there and you can get awesome shots with each as long as you learn about the camera your using. I use a Canon D10 and D50 SLR, I mainly shot with a 55-200mm or a macro lens. As for lighting I recenlty bought a light cube and it really works wonders for picture taking, it makes your subjects bright but not too bright If you are shooting a dark snake you normally want to go with a lighter background, and if you are shooting a lighter snake a darker background works very well. Also if you are using a SLR look into info of F-stops and focus, if you focus on darker parts of an animal vs lighter spots it will change the whole outcome of the picture.

Here are a few pics I took with my Canon and the photo cube

Thanks

May I ask what brand and where you purchased the photo cube? Those pics are great!

It was called an EZ light Cube, the smaller sized one, I beleive they have 3 different sizes. I actually purchased it on Ebay, it was around $75 I beleive in an auction. If you type in EZ light Cube under the lighting section in photography you should get a bunch of results.
Thanks
