I originally had a trio but unfortunately, one of the females didn't survive. On the up side, the remaining pair is doing excellent!

Those are awsome. I'd like to get a pair. Where did you get them? If you don't mind me asking.

heres a pic of some babies hatching last season.

western WC, Indiana. Photographed and released. Have never seen an eastern, although some literature claims they do not adjust to captivity as well. But I have found the same to be true for WC westerns ; unless you get them young and they usually do just fine.

actively hunt. I have kept several adults from the wild and never had a problem. they ate for me, they bred for me, and they did just fine. you just need to give them a large cage, plenty of food(try different things to get them started, rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, even chicks), a hide, and cooler hibernation temps than other ratsnakes.

I have a pair of Newton Co. locals that I hatched out in 06'. they are beautifull from that area but, you are right. the adults from this area are seemingly harder to acclimate. I have found that many prefer lizards(this includes glass lizards "this was by accident), medow voles, deer mice, and baby quail for the first couple of meals. They also seem to be smaller from this area. I have never seen one bigger than 40 inches.

ameratsnake Jan 20, 2009 07:08 PM

They can take much better pics than this. first=female second=male

wolfpackh Jan 20, 2009 10:18 PM

i spent a couple summers herping newton and benton counties and never had one adult eat. i tried voles, peromyscus, pet shop mice, nothing worked. the glass lizard meal is interesting. here is a gravid momma from benton co. , she was pushing 4 '. i have 2 males i found as hatchlings from benton co. sept of 06 and they are nearly 3 feet nowadays. i will post some recent pics soon.

I found two male Cook Co. IL animals last spring that where both pushing 72 inches. I also found 3 females that where all about 60 inches. The big ones are out there! The mother of my pair was 42 inches and was the biggest fox I ever found in Newton CO. IN and she produced 18 eggs, the most I've ever seen. All the other ones in my experiance ranged between 3 and 15 eggs. It seems the more north you go the bigger they get. My friend told me a story about a seven foot individual he found in Iron Co. MI, in the Upper Penninsula.

wolfpackh Jan 21, 2009 08:06 AM

amazing! that's bigger than any bullsnakes i came across in the newton / kankakee areas.

I've found some 6ft plus bulls in that area, but they're no fox snake! Uncovering a big bull and hearing that loud draged out HISSSSSSSSSSsssssssssssssssssssssssssss is ausome and gets your adrenaline going........But looking through a pile of tin when suddenly it sounds like someone just started a weed whacker! Then you flip the next piece.........there lies a dull orange-headed, black-blotched, tan and yellow, six foot monster, almost as wide as your wrist! I guess the only thing that could top that is..................................................

wolfpackh Jan 21, 2009 12:28 PM

found this crossing a desolate road in brown county one fine sept. evening....

You make James Cagney proud " you $%*/ rat."

You'll be one busy "papa" when they hatch, especially if you're the chief caretaker.
