Pillbugs or Sowbugs?

Zarula Jan 19, 2009 02:16 PM

Does anyone have any experience with raising and using pillbugs or sowbugs (AKA rolly-polies) as feeders for lizards, geckos, or even insect eating snakes?

I have been considering going out and collecting some and breeding them to feed to my crested geckos, and soon viper geckos or Stenos. I was thinking they would be better because their shells are made of calcium, not chitin like crickets and roaches. They also don't have the smell of crickets or the escape dangers (or "ew" factor) of roaches.

Hello,
Try a search for "Raising Terrestrial isopods". Also, the "Caudata.org" (=salamanders) forums has good info as well. They are easy to keep and are a usefull feeder. Good luck!
Adam
