I don't know what the best is...I guess the question is, "Best for what?"
I love the exotic look of Niles and I hear the Cubans are easy to condition, but my favorite has to be the simple American Alligator. It's the only species I've worked with and probably the only one I'd feel confident handling! I went to U of FL, so gotta have some gator love there, too. But honestly, the real reason I enjoy the gator is because I've grown up around them and I see them around here all the time. I can appreciate them up close as a native species and observe them in their natural habitat as well as in captivity (I do have a 2yo gator).
I like the Niles- bulky and thick, just look powerful.
I also like the American alligator for personality and sound.
Smooth fronted caiman are growing on me.

Boy thats a tough one they all have their good points but if I just had to narrow it down to a few I always liked working with Tomistoma and Gavialis due to their size and uniqueness, C.latirostris, M.niger and C.mindorensis for their rareity, and C.rombifer for their attitudes

You see the Cubans on alot of lists but I have never really understood it myself. They are nice animals but I think I'm missing something.

Top 5:
1. Salties
2. Orinoco
3. Black caiman
4. Cuban
5. Gharial
I'll second that.
I've had 19 species and bred 11 species. My favorites are American Crocodiles, Cuban Crocs, and third American Alligators. The fact is I never met a croc I didn't like...LOL...TC
If you're talking about keeping one as a pet, the Chinese alligator is easily among the top. They're small, relatively docile, and can handle temperature swings better. Good luck finding one though.
I don't know about the docile part, at least the 2 we have here. They are fence rushers and we're glad they are not the size of our Niles!
