Is my Leo overweight?

jccretarolo Jan 20, 2009 04:04 PM

I'm wondering if I should try and get my normal girl to lose weight as she looks fat. When I got her she was bigger and I have cut back the amount of food she gets. her weekly food intake is 2-3 large g/l crickets 3x a week and mealworms are in the tank every other day for 2-3 hours as my other girl likes them better.

Spot is the regular leo in question and Eagle is the other one. Also what morph is Eagle? They are just pets so it doesn't really matter just wondering. Btw the spots that are on Eagle are brown not black.

The gecko looks overweight(especially in the 2md pic). Are they male and female? If so, she might be developing eggs.

I would stop feeding the fat one for about 2 weeks altogether....don't worry, it's more than capable of going this long without any ill-effect. If you don't want to do that, Then I would feed it half of what you are offering right now until the proper physique is achieved.

Eagle looks like a high yellow tangerine. Eagle also looks like it might have a stripe going down its back so it might be called a "raining stipe"

I concur - looks a bit on the chunky side to me. Mine gets 3 crickets every 3 days, or roughly 2.5x/week, and she's @ a healthy weight, so I'd say cut back food to 2x/week or maybe once every 4 days for a while. As the other poster said, with that much fat reserve, she can fast for a bit with no ill effect, presuming she's not gravid.

I thought so and I don't think she is gravid as she is about 4-5 years old and is housed with another female. I have cut back on feeding and even then most of the time she only eats one cricket.
The reason I don't think she would be gravid is because she has never laid eggs before. At least thats what her old owner said and they had gotten her as a baby.
I will try going down to 1x a week feeding and see how she does. I also have stoped offering mealworms in the tank and feed the crickets in a seperate container so I know how many each leo does eat.

If the leos are housed together then separating for feeding is a good idea - where she is so much larger than the other leo in the tank i suspect she is the dominant leo and is eating most of the food.

I have an overweight female too and she is currently on a diet, i have cut back her food.

You could try fasting, although in my experience when leos fast they really dont loose weight. If they are healthy then they should be able to fast for quite some time without losing much weight at all. My leos will often fast for up to 1-2 months, when they fast for 2 months they will maybe lose 2 or 3 grams. I suspect that fasting for a week or two would not result in any weight loss at all. I suspect that you would have better luck by just cutting back on the food and promoting weight loss that way.

Surely just not 2-3 grams?

Everytime one of my 60 gram females takes a crap they lose 2-3 grams

lol - maybe i need to start weight my leos before and after they poop and see what the size difference is

My numbers arent exact, just a general - my point is that a healthy leo wont actually lose very much weight while fasting. When my leos fast on their own accord they never lose more than a few grams. I suspect that they slow their metabolism down when they are faced with no food - to prevent weight loss. So anyway, i suspect that with this reasoning in place you would have more luck with weight loss if you just cut back on food.

They have been fed seperatly for about the past 6m as only one will eat the mealworms (that would be the smaller of the 2) and the bigger one has only been get ing at the most 4 crickets 3x a week. I now am only feed ing her 1-2 crickets 2-3x a week and it hsn't helpped with her losing much weight. When I got her she would just have a bunch of crickets put in the tank and they were giving her a bowl of mealworms everyday. I have had her for almost a year and so far she has gone from 95g down to 87g. I'm guessing it will just take a while to get her slimmed down a bit.

Progress is progress, keep it up!

95 grams is enormous.........and without the giant gene!

Reptiles do everything slowly, so weight loss will (and should) take quite a long time, keep doing what you are doing.

95grams for a female is quite huge! Both of my males are 100 grams, but my females have never been that big. Even my female who is a fattie and currently on a diet as well was 85 at her largest.

You are doing a good job - keep it up

I have no idea on her lines so for all I know she could have giant in her. I got her because the poeple who had her said there kids were bored with her. I also know they spent almost $100 on her and to me for just a normal that seems like a really high price.

It's a very pretty normal though.

I received a normal super giant from Ron Tremper personally that he was selling for around $450

Here's a pic
