My recent education while feeding . . .

chongorojo Jan 20, 2009 07:38 PM

So my big female boa lives in an acrylic 150g fish tank I have been feeding her in an old 40g breeder it has quarter inch glass and they seem very strong so I figured they would be perfect and feeding in them had NEVER caused a problem & they never failed. that being said I put my big female in her 40G gave her a live rat and turned around after a few minutes of watching nothing and started feeding the ball rack I turn around and see that she has grabbed the rat from the top of the aquarium and was squeezing the rat and the side of the aquarium . . . . two lessons for me, stop feeding boa in glass aquarium and always supervise while feeding. . . yes my boa was fine and no the glass did not break. Phew! maybe it was a stupid mistake but I am happy to share my mistake so someone does not make it and have an animal get sliced up by it. Thanks for reading.

(do not beat me too hard she is my frist big snake)

Not beating you up for this, but the 3rd lesson is to STOP feeding live. You don't want to learn this lesson the hard way , lol.

reply on that. Although some might think it's cool to watch the Boa hunt, the fact is that they don't always have a successful wrap and the rat might have full head function and then BAM you poor Boa has some bad wounds. Give the rat and boa a break and crack the rat before feeding.

HA! I've had that happen a few times and i'm sure most here have.
