Temp Range?

massalvaje Jan 20, 2009 07:54 PM

I just aquired a very young (hatchling) Three Toed Box Turtle. I think I have the setup all ready with a deep-moist substrate of coco-fiber, spangum moss, water dish, UVB light, and lots of hides. I just need to know the best temp range to maintain a hatchling. I have read anywhere from mid 60s to as high as 90. I would assume that the medium of that would be ideal but we all know what assuming does. Also I have it in about a 3'x3' enclosure, is that too big for a hatchling or is it the bigger the better? Thanks for all of your help!

A temperature range of 75 to 85 should be fine. A hatchling doesn't necessarily need 3'x3' although there's nothing wrong with providing that much room, other than the fact that it may be difficult for you to locate the little guy now and then.

Thanks! I was wondering about the problem of finding him. Do I need to pull him out everytime it is time to feed him or will he come out on his own if I just put his food on a dish?

I like to make sure the hatchlings here eat, so if I were in your shoes, I'd try different approached and go with what works. Do not leave live food in the enclosure and then walk away: I have heard horror stories of meal worms and/or crickets injuring or killing hatchlings.
