more updates on the kidneys

varanid Jan 21, 2009 04:25 PM

They called me at work to say it looked like he has some sort of infection in his kidneys but they're not sure what it is. They're keeping him on antibiotics to make sure that he doesn't get additional infections after the surgery, and waiting for that biopsy to get back. He was also more dehydrated than I realized, so they've still got a small IV drip for liquid running into him. I'm less optimistic at this point. They said it'll be at least 2 days, possibly more. I'm really stressed now cause I thought we were home free and now we're not. Compound that with the fact I'm still getting out from my OWN medical bills and I'm really freaked cause I don't know how much this will run or even if it'll work.

I am not a reptilian nurse but kidney infections are treated with antibiotics succesfully all the time in people and other creatures. The dehydration- they are doing just what they are supposed to do.

Do you live in the USA? There is a company called Care Credit. It is a card you can qualify on the spot that will allow you to pay off the bill with no interest if you do it in a year or less. Good luck and blessings.

Did the vet mention anything about urate deposits or tophi being on any of the organs? That's a common silent killer in chronically dehydrated lizards.

No, she didn't mention any of that. I don't even know what tophi is. Hell, George was passing liquidish urates while waiting for the vet in the office--they weren't the normal chalky stuff, they were really runny and nasty. Looked like glue.
