Tick, Mite visibility

rdm01 Jan 22, 2009 11:56 AM

Hey everyone,

Ticks:
How visible are ticks on a snake? (ball python)
How big are they, and are they immediately noticeable?
Are they barely visible when young?

Mites:
Are there usualy a lot of mites present on a snake or can there be very few?

I know some of these are newbie questions,
Thanks for the help.

Ticks are rare unless you got wild caught imports. They can be seen without to much problem, but are sometimes hidden in the nares or heat pits. Once filled with blood, they increase to an obvious size, no matter where they are.

Mites can be minimal at first, but it usually doesn't take long for them to increase to obvious numbers. Watch the water dish for floating black specks. If mites, they'll pop open and contain blood.
