Too young to breed!?

shannondalsoglio Jan 22, 2009 01:31 PM

Now I've done it. I have been keeping my indigos together, one male two years old and a female 20 months old. I guess they cued in on the cooler weather and I found them locked up in copulo yesterday after the girl shed. I know she's too young to breed and will definatly separate them now. But what can I expect from this mating? I fear she may become gravid and then egg bound or worse. Does anyone know what I may expect? Live and learn. Shannon

Interesting...hopefully one of the very experienced breeders can comment. You seem to know this breeding is against conventional wisdom, most say minimum of 3 years and many say 4. However, others have been successful much younger, and it is amazing how young some snakes will breed, successfully. Are they over 5'? Let us know what happens, I wonder if snakes will copulate for fun, rather than likelihood of conception? good luck, Vic

The biological cues were just right.
They are preetyyoung, but you never know.

When the female goes "blue" for her next shed,
make sure you have a box ready for the eggs!

What would snakes do in the wild wait? now I know I'm gunna get flamed for this and no I'm not for breeding snakes at a young age. I am against it but if they mated that young in the wild and died wouldn't that just be an evolutionary flaw?? Isn't it Their purpose to breed and makes as many babies as possible to have a better chance of passing on there Genes? So wouldn't it make sense to breed As soon as possible?? so just provide the right temps and environment to make it all the easier for her and try not to do it again. ^_^ just my two cents...
Good luck, keep us informed

Cheers,
Ben
