The Gem of your Collection

RussBates Jan 22, 2009 07:26 PM

I'm curious to know if any of you have one particular snake in your collections that you feel is the "prize or gem" of the collection. I often times think I do and then I find myself working in my snake room and I pick up no particular snake and think "wow this is really a cool snake". I recently have added a few more locality rosy boas to my collection. I use to only keep rosys back in the mid 90s when I lived in CA but having them again really makes me appreciate how cool of a reptile they are. Heck they are one of two, true north american boas.....not counting the south american variety running around the Everglades I guess I'm going to have to get hot taking pictures so I can show you what I'm talking about.

In the interim, if you have a snake that you feel is the prize of your collection please show us and I'll do the same.

Russ

Joe,

How are you man? I hope all is well in your neck of the woods...Is your Vivid F1 female a 2006 or 2007? If 2007, we have siblings...

I wish I had the funds to acquire that one as well (never enough money when you really need it)...Nice choice man...Does your girl have white ventral scales? Just wondering...

My girl's ventrals are yellowish-tan (throat) to orange (tail) but, I'm not sure how she'll turn out. She used to be a very dark chocolate-brown...She's lighter now.

Later,
Jim.

Jim,
Busy busy busy!

Our snakes are sibs and the ventral are very similar by your description. I do believe I sent you a file in the past detailing the specimen number of that animal and it's vivid parents, if not I will do so tonight. I got an F2 male to go along with her from Tim, and then of course a pair of F2's from Greg so I'm real happy with that group.

Best

wow love number 2 vermylia line...awesome

CSRAJim Jan 26, 2009 09:12 AM

Russ,

Thanks man...

Yep, he is definitely a "Gem" specimen (thanks serpentdan). When I put him down on 12/21/08, he weighed 411 grams at approximately 40 months of age (hatch date: 08/12/05).

I only feed him once per week...His current feeding regimen is 1 x med mouse (two feedings) or 1 x small mouse and 1 x 1-3 day old quail (every third feeding)...He's crusing for food after about 24-32 hours after feeding! He's the second largest specimen in my collection...

He's one of those that has converted food into growth at a phenomenal rate. He went from pinks to fuzzies to hoppers to mice way ahead of the others. I'm not sure where he'll be size wise at 60 months...We'll see.

Later,
Jim.

Dang that first one pictured is a real screamer. What did it look like as a hatchling?

CSRAJim Jan 26, 2009 09:47 AM

Russ,

Not much of an ontogenetic change for her...She's remained relatively unchanged for her approximately 20 months of life...She was 59 grams on 12/25/08 when I put her down.

Her dam was a pale white/yellow Leonis (with reduced black borders) and her sire was an MSP (photo #6; VR Thayeri on Vivid's website-No photo of the dam)...

She's approximately 12 months of age in photo #1 and 6 months of age in photo #2...

Later,
Jim.

CSRAJim Jan 26, 2009 09:55 AM

Adam,

Yep, there are similarities and they could de distantly related but, they are at least one generation removed if Tim's "retired female" is the source...

What's neat about your 2006 female are the "double split" saddles with the innner black border ring intact...Smith describes this in his '44 "Hoogstraal Expedition" on Bob's website...

Very nice specimen you've got there Adam for sure...

Jim.

That's a tough one. I just can't decide so here's a few.

The famous Sharktooth.

The "watchamacallit" hehe.

Some non-thayeri ones

Like I said, it's kind of tough for me so I'll let you guys decide.

i guess Walt, acquired from Chris Garcia, would have to be the go to guy right now, but some of his and Mildred's progeny might end up putting the old man down, lol, but he has quite a few good years left in him!

First of all Todd,

Let me get out of this beautiful little city I am working in....Canton, Ohio.....sarcasm....
Places this cold shouldn't have oil refineries...LOL!

...I should be home by next weekend, but the wife and I are headed to California(Bay area)the following Monday....I will not be back home til mid May....the wife will be home after a week stay in Cali....
Maybe I'll take some pics this weekend..or..I should teach my wife to take pics.

My '03 Vivid F1 female throws the most varied clutches I've ever had. Leonis, MSPs, pinners, white, yellow, buckskin, orange... all in the same clutch for 3 years straight.

My '06 mex-mex from Tony Mangini is puppy dog tame and big. I'm looking forward to breeding him this year to an '06 black mex-mex from Jim Sargeant.

shannon brown Jan 28, 2009 01:15 AM

Beautiful thing I have in my collection. She is a little short but she is for sure a screaming light phase with a nice nuchal blotch.Proven breeder also!LOL....

I love you sweetie.

...to pick just one really.

This guy (s.FL mole king) is a real gem however in that he's the only known specimen from the county he was found in last year.

He was immediately put to work and produced a few offspring...

Since this the mexicana forum..this is maybe my favorite mex mex
