Help deciding on a new kingsnake

jesterx626 Jan 23, 2009 12:10 AM

I only have a single 20" cb calking, and I'm considering purchasing another species as i'm doing pretty decent with my current calking. I want to go bigger. What species of kings get bigger than 3 feet but also, not too snappy?

Sometimes I think the kid with two pet snakes has something that those of us with 50 to 200 lost a long time ago.

I've worked with Cal kings, eastern kings, Florida kings, eastern black kings, desert kings and Mexican black kings.
I've found MBKs to be the least snappy (by far) than any other common king I've kept and bred.

I've had similar results from my experience with kings too. MBK seem to prefer musking than nipping.

I vote MBK as well. Great disposition, especially as adults. Bigger than Cals and good eaters... Plus, there's that wonderful sheen.

Why not get another cal king of the opposite gender and learn about the fun of breeding snakes.

If you want another snake get a corn snake, they grow real fast they never bite and they are real pretty and a hatchling cost about 25 dollars at the shows

My vote goes for HONDO;
While not so much snappy, as neonates they are skirmish but tend to grow out of it as they get older, Honduran milks can get huge 48" is not uncommon and eat like champs. Plus you have a ton of colors to choose from..

I agree with the comment on Hondurans. After they get a little size on them, they are pretty calm. Another one of my favorites is the black milksnake.

Awww heck, why not an alerna. As long as it's an established feeder, you'll be good to go. Although they don't commonly exceed three feet, there are the occasional ones that do.

So much to choose from eh?

Nice one Jerry! You want big, get an eastern, or floridana. Just watch those fingers with the brooksi and goini! Me, I like 'em all!

Hey Todd,

never had brooksi, but I had bred goini for some years in the 90's, and they are beasts. Loved 'em, but I always had the spray bottle and paper towels right behind 'em due to the poop factor. Almost as bad as the couperi. I miss my patternless ones especially.

Glad to say I have all 10 digits remaining, but there were some close ones where they'd just nearly miss me and wrap around the feeder tongs. Ahhh, the old days!

They only put holes in your fingers, nothing more. Now varanids, their teeth are like razors. Cheers

You want to try a good one----stick your finger in a puffer fishes mouth! Being used to having "bass thumb" and lipping bass, I tried to pull a huge puffer fish out of a coral reef by "lipping" it. Not a good idea. Right through the entire thumb and to the ER two days later for blood poisoning. Guess I was having one of my "moments" when I did that one. I will have to see if I can find and scan some of the photos. (West Palm Beach)

When we go herping this year I will share with you my red-belly story. Let's just say I have a frozen one from, ohhh, about 10 years ago (back when I was much crazier...) with a chunk of my fingertip still in it's bowel. Yeah, I know . . . . luckily it healed well, but I don't know which pain was worse -- that or passing a kidney stone.

Say, isn't there another forum for this type of talk? lol....
