dragon breeding help!!

pahuntr61 Jan 23, 2009 08:27 AM

Hi,

I have a pair (yes, I'm sure they are male/female) of dragons that I have been trying to breed for the past few months. They are both about 2.5 years old. I put them in with each other in September and the male would bob and try to mount the female and she would arm waive, but they wouldn't actually mate. After about a month of this, I decided I would cool them down. I just warmed them up and put them back with each other and they keep going through the motions, but no mating. Any ideas? Could it be a problem with one of the dragons? I have them in a 50gal wide tank on a sand/dirt substrate will all the proper lighting.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

D

I wish I had your problem. I'm surprised the female arm waves. Usually she bows to the male is response to his head bobs. Does she ever do this? They may have mated but preferred that you not see. Sometimes dragons that live together don't mate. I think the males get more worked up when the don't see a female full time.

I've never really seen her "bow", but sometimes she does little head bobs, but usually just arm waiving. This is the first time they've been back together in a few months. It's true that they might be mating when I'm not seeing them... I'm just skeptical because I had them together before for a while and they never mated.

They don't mate all year. Usually only in the spring. I live in NJ and all my males are ready to go now. Many of my females are still sleeping. But the 2 non-handicapped adult females that are awake are ready and looking for mates. Maybe try having them around together on the floor.

ur not the only person this has happened to...before i had my current female, lizzy i had another female, eureeka and no matter what i did magellan refused to mate with her and a couple weeks later i got lizzy and magellan went right at her nd did the deed...sometimes i think some males are just very picky about females they want

Another thing that happens, when the male tries to mount the female, she crawls away and he eventually gives up. Any ideas on how to get the female more receptive?

I don't think it's a female problem. The male pretty much take control and usually drag the females around. Are they about the same size?
