Heat tape help!!!

MimC85 Jan 24, 2009 01:01 PM

Alright - so im slowly working on changing over to a rack system for my corns. I have started by converting some shelves i already have to racks for my existing corns. I've bought the tubs and have heat tape ordered already - but my question is in regards to wiring the heat tape.

This is the link i have been using to help with wiring: http://www.arbreptiles.com/cages/flexwire.shtml

So my issue is that for wiring the instructions say to use a "metal connector" (seen here: http://www.arbreptiles.com/cages/flex_clip.jpg)

So i have looked around and cant find anything like that - i tried home depot first and they had no idea and sent me to an electrical supply store. The folks at the electrical supply store had nothing like that, and no idea where to get it.

So - we have access to a soldering gun and my boyfriend can solder it - but im just wondering what everyone else uses to wire them? I am suprised at how hard it has been to find the metal connector - or does everyone just solder it?

thanks

I always use the metal connectors. I get all my supplies from a couple sites that advertise on the classifieds of this site.

Do you happen to know which sites they are?

If you are getting the heat tape as a kit, you will already have the connectors you need with the kit. If you are buying just the tape you will need to look at The Bean Farm under their heat section.

The Bean Farm also has long sections of heat tape with the connections already wired and ready to plug into a light socket. No, I do not work for them. They just have a lot of great stuff.

I've soldered mine. NOT something I recommend. I clear off 1/2"-3/4" of the plastic on the copper rail. this is the hardest part to do well. Use a braided wire and unwind the braid. silver tip the wire, then with liberal flux solder to the rail. Silver solder is best.

I have a friend at reptiletubs.com that sells that stuff if you cant find it. I know he has boxes. Eric is a good guy,

I've soldered all of mine. As long as you make sure you have a good connetion, you shouldn't have an issue. I really prefer the soldering to the few that my gf used the connectors on. Much less bulky. Just make sure to cover the exposed metal in electrical tape.
