New Alligator

stxlatina Jan 25, 2009 06:05 PM

I just acquired a new gator. About 6 months old maybe 24". He is active in and out of the wakes but he won't eat. He is currently in a 55 gallon aquarium with a filter and heater that maintains a water temp of 82 degrees. Plenty of fish to choose from. But still nothing. Any suggestions would be great. Btw I already ordered the Mazuri croc diet just waiting for delivery. Again any feedback is appreciated.

i wouldnt worry to much yet. for one thing, if you just got him, give him a chance to get acclimated and his appetite should pick up. plus eventhough the waters warm, he knows its winter and his environment has probably been crazy lately.. give him a little time.. if theres still no change, you can always force feed something small to spark the appetite.

You just got him so he is still stressed and its a new enviroment so he is really stressed. Give him some time. Also I hope that 55 gallon tank is just temporary and that you are working on building him a new cage/pond because at 24" that is to small. He will have trouble turn around and not have much room at all which will also add to the stress. I hope you have the room for a gator and didnt buy on a impulse ( not being mean just dont know your background in reptiles or anything )

Thank you for the feedback. I actually jumped the gun on his size. he is actually just under 15". His tank is definitely temp. All feedback is what I figured but just wanted to be sure. Although I have extensive experience with reptiles, this is my first alligator. Again thank you.

My suggestion would be to provide him/her with more hiding spots than you think are really necessary! Crocodilians, as mentioned, need time to acclimate to new surroundings and by providing ample places to hide, their feeling of security will increase and the alligator will feel more comfortable in the new enclosure. I would not force feed unless something is really wrong and the alligator is too sick to eat for itself.
