Would an '03 MALE be ready by spring/summer 04...

h0mersimps0n Sep 10, 2003 05:56 AM

to breed? If I fed him heavily all winter long, and got him as big as anyone could in 6-10months time, would he be viable?

I know Kathy's book says there are a lot of restrictions for the female and very few developmentally for the male but how extreme does this rule go?

More of a curiosity than reality (i.e. no flames cause it's probably not going to happen)...

In 2000 I had a male Sunglow Motley that I thought was a female. He was housed with a 12 months old normal. So on accident he bred to her and she had 7 fertile eggs that hatched. He was 6 months old when he fertilised her. I have seen more than one yearling males that where easily ready to breed. Females need to be older and heavier.

it "could" happen, like it did for marcel. And I've heard of it happening to others as well. But in most cases the clutches are small. I think If I were you I'd just try my hardest to be patient for another year. Last fall I ended up buying a 2 year old male so I could breed my snow, and after they made beautiful babies I sold him to a friend, so now he's retired, at 2-1/2! LOL (Poor guy) But the reason I bought him was because my younger male was sooooooooo much smaller than my female. Next year the SMR anery gets a chance I was glad I bought the older male to breed with her though, they gave me 15 eggs, 13 healthy hatchlings, so I'd say hold off a year, let him suffer puberty alone like most human males do

Is that powerfeeding an animal is not healthy. It may affect the breeding (though I'm not certain about this). Be patient for the animal's sake.

Thanks for the reply's, I think it was TCSM that I read about feeding and growing corns too quickly and their weight exceeding their skeletal ability to hold together (i.e. adverse health effects).

I'm probably going to tone back my feeding a bit and just keep things how they are- let the little one's grow and the older one's mate.

thanks again
