Albino / Pied Morph Question

Crush54 Jan 26, 2009 06:36 AM

Question : If you had an Albino and bred it to a Pied what would you get. Do you have a chance at an Albino Pied or would the Pied have to be het for albino. Does it matter which is male or female? Is there a preference here? Thank you for your help in advance.

The Albino and Pied genes are both recessive so your offspring would all look normal but would be 100% het Pieds and 100% het Albinos. Now you could breed the offspring back to one of either parents and hopefully get some visible albinos or pieds depending on which parent you breed it to (if you breed it to the pied you are hoping for a visable pied, there is still not shot for the double combination yet). You then hope that some of your visible pied or albino offspring are hets for albino. Which then you would breed this offspring to the other parent and hope to get a double combination.

You could also breed the hets to each other, however, keep in mind that brother to sister inbreeding is closest genetic breeding set which may pay back with deformities, but you have that double combination in the shots, even it it is a 1/32 or 1/64 (can't remember off the top of my head).

Double recessive is the hardest double combination you can make but it pays off if you can get it. Once you have it you can knock the odds down to 1/4 by breeding it to a double het.

Hope this helps,
Matt

This is why I need to read over my stuff before I hit post.

"your visible pied or albino offspring are hets for albino"

Should say "your visible peid or albino offspring are hets for the oppsite gene."

I understand, thank you. What if the Albino was het for Pied and the Pied was het for albino? What would the outcome be then? Would it drop the odds enough to pull one out of the first clutch? Have you see prices on Albinos het for pied and Pied het for Albino? Thank again for you help.

The only way to grantee that you get albino pieds in a clutch is to breed an albino pied to and albino pied, any other combination that involves hets falls to probablity, which means there is no grantee but there is possiblity.

If you get a Albino het pied and a Pied het albino yes the odds are much better, 1/16 odds; however, just because you may not get the double combination you have some very good odds of getting Albinos and Pied that would be possible hets. However if you are planning on going this route also keep in mind that you are speeding up the process of getting your double morph; however, you will have to pay for that.

I personally have never seen abino het peids or peid het albino on the market but I am sure if you talk to some of the larger breeders you may be able to get some bids. Also if you choose to go this route I would recommend getting a male pied simply because a pied is worth more then an albino and you can breed the male to other females to help offset the cost.
