BRB Breeders

Sorry, I've been posting so much on this section... don't mean to take up space. This may be my last question. :D

So, I've been doing my reading and I think a Brazilian Rainbow Boa is the right pet for me. I'm fine with the temperament and everything, and I do have snake experiance. I'm set to get one in March!! (Still low on funds after my beardie)

Now I'm looking into breeders. I'd love to get a hypo or something, but like I said before, there are money restrictions. So I can't afford a morph. And it is very important to me that it eats f/t rodents. Of course I wouldn't bring it back if it would only eat live, but I have more than enough feeding-related stresses with my BP.

I don't want a sick boa. I don't want a wild-caught boa. I don't want an abused boa. Obvoiusly. I'd love to do a rescue, but this is my first boa, and I'd like to get the whole boa-thing down before I do any rescues. So what are some notable BRB breeders that I should know of? I know about Jeff Clark. While I'm browsing, what are some other names I should know?

All of the Rainbow people who advertise on the top of this forum are very good people to deal with - as I have bought from all of them. I want a diverse bunch of snakes for breeding and feel that I am getting there.

....I will vouch for everyone I know who breeds Brazilian Rainbow Boas. There are some who advertise here on kingsnake and many more who don't. Just be careful. Some people who talk like they are breeders at shows are really dealers and traders rather than breeders. You can usually spot them by the sick looking other animals they have for sale.
....Most people who breed snakes also raise their own rodents or buy live rodents in bulk and feed live at first to new babies. It has been my experience that all Brazilian Rainbow Boas will eventually switch over to eating dead prey. Many of them make the switch pretty easily but some take some work. I like to see my babies eat a bunch and grow. They like live best and so that is what they get.

I guess I see where you're coming from about the live food thing. If I were a snake, I'd prefer live. But I have had so many near-heart attacks when I thought a rat had bitten my ball python. Also, a rat chewed through the probe cord on my digital thermometer, so now I have to buy another. That tought me a lesson.

My rule of thumb is that if I would not want the rodent biting me I do not feed it live to my snakes. The bite of a hopper or small adult mouse is nothing and the bite of a two or three ounce rat is nothing so I do not hesitate to feed them live to my snakes at that size. If the rodent is bigger than that it gets killed before it goes in with the snake.

Don't be sorry, we all welcome chatting, questions, both on and off topic.

Like the others said, there are many decent breeders both on our little forum and off. Just pay attention to how they talk, what they say and how much they know about the individual baby. Quite often the "dealers" will have a cage or tub full of babies, not individually tubbed and identified. I can vouch for each of the sponsors of this forum. We all treat our babies as individuals.

Sent you a PM about another breeder I can vouch for but who is not regularly on this sight. He's who I got my current adult pair from.

Sean.

You might want to wait a little longer before picking up a baby. March is pretty much still mating season and you'll get the best of selection of babies in the Aug-Oct range.

And Dave, Jeff- very diplomatic responses!

Totally correct on the waiting till fall thing, many babies are born then. Supply and demand, you'll pay more now for a lesser selection cause many breeders are either out or only a couple of babies left for sale.

LOL, one clear advantage of this forum, we're all friends as well!

Thanks! I probably won't have the money by March anyways. That is definitely something to consider. How long does the breeding season normally last?

There will be a few litters born here and there in the next several months but the bulk of the litters will be in July/August/September. Most of the early litters will be with smaller breeders that have their animals together all the time. I (and other large breeders) use the breeding season to maximize our success. Breedingn seems to be most productive with a period of cooler temps and shorter days followed by a warming trend. Winter giving way to spring...
