Using Coco Bedding

SecondsOut Jan 26, 2009 08:57 PM

Hello everyone! I'm new to herping, got my first bp yesterday. He's a het albino male, I named Napoleon. Everything went well in the setup, and he seems to be adapting to his new habitat well. The only problem was that I couldnt find aspen bedding. The breeder told me that coco bedding is a suitable alternative. Does anyone use/prefer coco bedding? Is it safe for my little boy? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

never heard of it but have heard of cocoa mulch. FYI... Cocoa is poisonous to dogs and cats if ingested! If that's what you are talking about, IMO, you shouldnt use it!

Its made from a ground coconut fiber called coir.

Coco bedding (ie Coco soft) Is made from coconut husk and is perfectly suitable for ball pythons especially when it comes to holding humidity. Just keep it clean and you will be fine.

However...

"Cocoa" is chocolate in its raw form and we all know its is fatal to dogs and cats. And no one would even bother to use it for bedding. Unless you lined your tank with Hershey bars or bakers chocolate. Then your just dumb.

Your good to go. Good luck and hope you enjoy this as much as the rest of us!!!

worst case scenario if your still unsure just use newspaper for the mean time and when you do find aspen available you can go ahead and use that. Good luck and congratulations with napoleon!!!

That's what I'm doing. For some reason, my order online is taking forever. So i'm just using Newspaper. My babies seem to have adjusted well and it's temporary anyway. I'm never ordering it online again. i don't know why I did that.

I believe only bakers chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs.

Personally, I think aspen sucks. Coconut husk holds humidity better, doesn't mold easily, is even easier to spot clean, and is digestible (not that I feed on it). You're better off this way.
