Some basic WTF care questions

Snakemother Sep 10, 2003 07:50 AM

Okay, my daughter's new WTF is set up in a 20 high tank with many of those vines and plastic leafy suctioncup vegetation things sold at pet stores. He has a half log hide (never uses it except to sit on occasionally) and a water bowl (big enough to stretch out in, which he was doing last night). It's heated with an infrared spot bulb that keeps his home at 75 - 83F. His humidity ranges from 40 to 60 (I mist when it gets below 50). I feed Zim (my daughter named him after her favorite cartoon guy, who's green) 6 good size crickets every other night, dusted with calcium and vitamins. His water pool is changed then, too, and fresh spring water put in.
His color ranges from a bown on top with green underneath when he's resting during the day, to bright green when he's playing at night or chasing crickets (he's already figured out when I mess with his water pool he's gonna get fed, and gets down on the bottom of the tank, ready to eat). He's gotten plumper since we've had him, but looks to be just right in plumpness right now for his size (he's about the size of a half dollar). I've read that over-plumpness can be a problem with these guys, but Zim's still growing. Do I have to worry about this yet? Does my feeding schedule and amount seem right? How about the rest of his setup?
Thanks in advance for your advice and help!

Sounds like you did research, which is good
Set up sounds good. Maybe add a branch running diagonally from top to bottom for something to climb on.
Since it's a small frog, make sure water level in dish is low. WTF's like to sit in the bowl and they will dive at crickets that get into the water and if the water is too high they can and will drown. Also make sure to change the water every day. Very important for any frog. WTF's tend to "do their business" in the water nightly.
Also since he's a youngin, alot of people say to feed nightly (2 or 3 crickets not longer than the width of the frogs head) until close to maturation. I think it's a good practice since you're gonna be changing water nightly anyway.
Doing this at work so, If I've forgotten anything, someone else will post.

You mentioned their plumpness.......
WTF's do get very plump. The best way to tell when Zim is getting too plump will be to watch the flesh-roll above the eardrum. On WTf that flesh-roll will start coming down over their eardrum as they get older (and plumper). I assume Zim is an Indonesian WTF. They are chunkier than the Australian WTF which are more sleek bodied (which is what I have). I believe I saw someone mention that for Indo WTF the flesh-roll can come down 1/3 over the eardrum and be ok, but more than that is becoming unhealthy. Anyone with better info please correct me if my figure is wrong.
