Another Feeding Question-Sorry

Dpoling Jan 27, 2009 04:20 PM

I went to the pet store today and these were my two options. I am worried that one is too small and the other is too big. Up to this point, I had only been feeding large fuzzies/almost hoppers; like the size of the grey mouse in the pic. I would be making a pretty big jump with the white/black.

So, is it OK to feed this snake the black and white mouse or should I stay with the grey one? I am being overly cautious about feeding something too big, please help! This snake is about 5 months old.

Yay questions - dont be sorry!

I tend to err on the side of smaller when I have a prey item size question. Dave & Jeff both feed their young snakes prey items a lot larger than mine get. I'm sure your kid can take that larger mouse without issue. I'm betting it'll leave a good sized lump so dont handle him for 4-5 days after he eats it. I'd personally go with the smaller one, but that's me. There are plenty of variations on correct ways to feed a BRB, I'm sure he'll do fine with either.

Totally agreed with you, but I looked at the size of the BRB in hand and it looks like it's a decent fed 5 month old. While I would not feed that to a hatchling, I believe a hatchling could take it down. Like Julie said, leave it be to digest afterwards and maybe even go 10 days before next feed.

I doubt the snake will have any problem eating the black and white mouse. Pretty much any mouse or rat who's girth is about 1.5 times the girth of your snake when empty, or smaller, is fine.

Also keep in mind a wet mouse is quite a bit skinnier than he appears when dry and his fur is all fluffy.
