Tree monitor info

BryanD Jan 27, 2009 05:16 PM

As I'm rediscovering my interest in the varanus complex, I'm eager to find any info I can on tree monitors.

Prasinus is fairly well documented but macraei is just a singularly stunning animal that I'd love to learn more about. It seems there's even less info out there on the yellow trees (boehmi??) and most searches come back with info on melinus instead. Anyone have any good juicy pdf's I can sink my teeth into? Natural history, captive husbandry, anything really would be appreciated. I've done the requisite google searches but so far haven't found much of substance. Even their propensity towards omnivory seems poorly documented?

Borrowed a photo for the sake of eye candy, someone's a lucky SOB.

The "Yellow Tree Monitor" is Varanus reisingeri and is the one pictured on top of the 3 followed by the "Blue Tree" V. macraei and "Green Tree" V. prasinus. I'm not aware of common names for either V. kordensis or V. boehemi. Pick up the textbook Varanoid Lizards of the World by King and Pianka off of Amazon.com.

I have seen this name used a few times too over macraei. Anyone have any idea why?

Other then of course the scientific system for naming monitors is a cluster Fudge.

Thanks,
Mike.

JB,
What's the title of the book written by Bernard Eidenmuller? David recommended it to me quite awhile back and my PC crashed since then and I lost my suggested reading material list.

Thanks!
Mike

I believe he's written a few things and they need to be translated editions from German to English. I'm not sure which text David recommended to you. I wasn't there. His name is Bernd Eidenmüller though and he wrote one good one titled MONITOR LIZARDS if you look here:

While we're on the subject, beccarri is closely related to these others? No??

Black trees, wc's anyway, are frequently available. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them they can share? Hardier than prasinus perhaps?

Yes, Black trees are closely related and have even been crossbred to nominate V. prasinus in captivity a few times. I don't think their care is much different. They just happen to fetch less money because of a combination of where they're poached from and the fact they aren't quite as stunning to most folk as "emerald" monitors I believe.

Similarly, if Dumeril's monitors kept their brilliant orange juvenile heads, they'd probably fetch more than the measley $150-200 price tag.
