Papuan probe depth?

jonasgn Jan 29, 2009 05:57 AM

Hey
Does any of you know the probe depth of papuan pythons?
I have had 1,2 (i think) for almost a year now and would really like to know if i got a male and two females.
I probed the one i think is the male and tre probe went in 9-10 subcaudal scales.
What do you guys think?

Thanks for any input

Jonas

I think you nailed it. Males typically probe 9 to 12, females about half that, or slightly less.

LOL....you can lose your probe on a big male.

Ok thanks guys. Good to hear.
I will probe them all, but it`s quite hard to probe a 9 foot papuan, that really doesn`t want to be probed
I will get a friend of mine to help holding them.

The pair of mine were 12'. I always had a tremendous amount of respect for their strength.

The other day my 9 foot female (I guess) constricted my arm. She use to do it really tight and hard, but this time she put a little more effort in to it. It actually hurt.
She made some of my bloodvessels (right word?) burst,so now i have a bruise around my forearm.
The reason i held her behind the neck, was because i was examinating her mouth. It looked a little swollen, but it was fine.

This may be a common practice. I imagine it is, the easiest and safest way to hold a large snake for probing.
I believe I read about it in something written by the Barkers but I don't see it on the VPI site.
The snake should be put into a pillow case with only enough tail sticking out as the prober needs.
It isn't easy to hold a snake like this but it sure beats having that extra 8 feet of snake waving around and knocking things over. Or biting.
As I said, I can't take credit for this, it's just something I read somewhere that has worked well for me.

For anything over 9-10 feet, it really is a good idea to use two people. Even the most placid Burmese does not always enjoy having a probe inserted.

Yeah, for example, it's not easy keep a 9' Olive in the bag while probing...hypotheticallt speaking of course. Good meeting you at Carlisle, Jay.
