thermostat advice needed

brick1 Jan 29, 2009 04:38 PM

right, the racks i made earlier in the month need stats. The tubs are like 95x55x18cm and i have bought heatmats that are 53x28cm 28W The essentially will cover exactly 1/4 of the tub. My rep rooms temp sits on about 73 pretty steady.

now im unsure which stats to use, i would prefer to use Habistats, as thru a wholesaler i can get them very cheap.

ideally i would have gone for a Helix etc, as really like the digital displays, but they dont do for the european market yet, voltage wise

pulse, dimming etc etc. What to go for? Guessing i dont really need the night time drop, as i can just control that by a timer, and the room never gets below like 72.
i guess i can run quite a few mats of the one stat, as they only 28w each, and the rack is all made the same, and the snakes in it will all be BRBs and of roughly the same size

thoughts? decisions decisions....

cheers

Are the Habistats all you have access to? Nothing similar to Herpstat or Helix? If so, it sounds like an open market to step into.

I have 2 Helix units, but have moved to the Herpstats. I like the high/low temperature alarms and the percentage of power used displayed on the screen.

I hate those cheap thermostats you can get from Big Apple. I had one fail in the wide open position and kill a snake in a quarantine cage. I dont know if your Habistats are similar to the cheapies on this side of the pond, but I'll never use one those again after that experience.

i think that Habistats are a european brand (not 100% sure), and are one of the most expensive over this side of the world. Pretty sure they sell in the US aswell, as saw some on some of Daves Boa cages in a post not long back.

Yeah Helix emailed me back, saying that yes they were in development stages, of designing one for the european market.

At one stage i was tempted to just run the whole rep room of 120V, ie use some kind of inverter, thus i could then use Helix or Ranco for example and plus be able to work with flexiwatt. Flexiwatt is not for sale over here, might even be illegal, i think the europeans think its just for the yanks trying to burn their houses down

I believe the Habistats are decent units, proportional, not on/off units. Analog adjustment though, I do love my digital units. So easy to decide to go some number of degrees higher or lower and make that adjustment first time.

IMO go with multiple units and night drop is nice if not significantly more expensive - think of future options.

The more cages/racks/heat elements on one thermostat, the more animals that are affected by any type of failure. Also, with multiple units you can compensate for vertical temp differences in your room.

LOL, just did a quick inventory of my thermostats and bottom line, right now I have 69 thermostat channels!!!

7 Herpstat Pro's in service, 2 more for planned projects = 36 channels

13 Helix DBS1000's

5 Habistats in use and 13 more loose from the cage remodels.

1 Ranco Double unit = 2 channels.
